I’ve been talking with Christian college students from across the country who continue to express their concern about the ways their parents seem to conflate their faith with far right wing politics.
One student was in tears as they expressed how the partisan agenda is creating a rift between them and their parents. They expressed that they accept their parents for their views, but wished that their parents would do likewise. Many Christian students are feeling this way.
My encouragement to any Christian who feels like they might lose their family as a result of their divergent views on politics, race, or societal issue is to let your parents know that it makes you sad that you feel like they would condemn you for disagreeing with their views.
Parents, know that your children love and respect you. Know that they know your viewpoint because that is what they grew up with. I encourage you to actually listen to your children and see why they are believing what they are. Some of you might benefit from learning from them.
I am impressed with the rising generation of Christian students. They are asking big questions about life and the world. They are asking deep questions about God. They want to not only be faithful to the call of God in their private lives, but also care about public witness.
I pray that our political and ideological commitments do not tear families apart. Ultimately, I think the onus is on the parents who should create space for their children to wrestle with ideas and come to conclusions, encouraging them to stay close to Jesus while they grow.
