There were a few big clues hiding in this case play, that could lead us to correct answer:
The first was “common foul”. Here is definition of Common Foul, per NFHS Rule 4-19-2.
Note the green highlighted portion.
(2/10)
After reading that Rule, you may have this question: “Then why did the case play say ‘during a try for goal’ if a common foul can’t be committed against a player trying for goal?”. Well, for that answer, we have to read the next line of the case play that says...
(3/10)
“after A1 has completed the ‘act of shooting’”. It’s important to note that just bc A1 is no longer “trying for a field goal” after the act of shooting is completed, the “FG Try” hasn’t officially ended yet. That’s the distinction.
Now let’s explore the 2nd clue...
(4/10)
The 2nd clue in case play is “after A1 has completed ‘act of shooting’”. For this definition we go to NFHS Rule 4-41-1.
Note that the act of shooting ends when “ball is clearly in flight”, BUT also note that it “includes an airborne shooter”.....
(5/10)
So just bc the ball is in flight, doesn’t mean A1 has completed the act of shooting. Let’s go to Rule 4-1-1 (Airborne Shooter). From article 1 & 2, we can gather that if A1 jumped to shoot in our case play, the act of shooting is not completed until A1 returns to floor...
(6/10)
-Since A1 completed act of shooting when B1 fouls A1, that solidifies this as a “common foul”
-Based on “Rule 10 Penalties Summary”, we know no FTs are awarded for common fouls before bonus rule is in effect
-Since the Try by A1 was successful, it will count...
(7/10)
-In addition to the goal being scored for Team A, Team A will also be awarded the ball for a throw-in at the spot out of bounds nearest where the foul occurred, per NFHS Rule 7-5-4

Hopefully this thread helped clarify some of the confusing wording in this case play.
(8/10)
This vid isn’t just like Case Play, but same rules apply.
I’m the T (calling official) in this clip.

-A1 jumps to shoot
-A1 returns to floor
-B1 backs into/displaces A1

I rule Common Foul (non-shooting) on B1 & point to End Line to designate spot for Team A’s Throw-in

Thanks for participating as always!
