My friend @Ash_Bash23 is a Black, trans disabled activist who was recently fired by Greenpeace in the middle of a pandemic. Ash turned down a small severance that would've required them to sign a non-disclosure agreement that I'm glad they didn't sign. http://bit.ly/helpash
Because while one month’s pay and housing is more than most people get upon being fired, it is not enough to start over during a pandemic -- especially for a Black, trans, disabled person. They deserve so much more, fam. http://bit.ly/helpash
As Ash notes on their crowdfund page, marginalized people have always navigated crises by sharing their struggles and traumas, and by helping each other overcome obstacles to our safety and survival. NDA’s obstruct that dynamic. http://bit.ly/helpash
Other concerning aspects of the situation are events that unfolded prior to Ash being fired, such as them being reprimanded for spending too much time organizing Black Lives Matter protests and jail support in recent months. http://bit.ly/helpash
They were also told by a supervisor that abolition is not consistent with climate justice. This is a gross misunderstanding (that reflects a total unwillingness to learn) on the part of that supervisor. http://bit.ly/helpash
It is also deeply inappropriate for someone in a position of authority at a nonprofit to make such statements without investigating anything about abolition, its history, or connection to major issues. Ash was treated horribly here. http://bit.ly/helpash
Large nonprofits have a habit of embracing marginalized people and marginalized perspectives when it’s en vogue to do so, and abandoning them when they are not. We have seen this play out in chilling ways since abolition recently went in and out of style. http://bit.ly/helpash
So I am asking for y’alls help making sure my dear friend gets the severance package they deserve, from people who actually care and won’t seek to silence them. http://bit.ly/helpash
I believe that our solidarity can do more for Ash than GP was offering to & that we can help them get the fresh start they deserve. Pls join me in this effort if you can. This is someone I love & I'm determined to make sure they're OK during the pandemic. http://bit.ly/helpash
So much love to everyone who is helping out. I told Ash to be hopeful, and that, after all they have done for others, I thought they should give people a chance to show up for them. Thank you for making that true. We will get them through this. https://bit.ly/helpash
