You are my people. It doesn& #39;t make a difference whether you accept it or not, I know that you are my people because I see you and live my life with you every day. We open doors for each other. We take turns and smile politely when crossing one another& #39;s path.
We live in the same building, or on the same street.  We laugh at dumb crap that happens to us or out in the world. We love our pets. We watch the same top tier shows and the same sports, play the same video games and have opinions that usually agree but occasionally don& #39;t...
...provided we leave out politics. It& #39;s hardly ever a big deal for us to disagree... provided we leave out politics. I& #39;m not gonna say we don& #39;t fight, because like all neighbors, occasionally we do get mad at each other
--but that usually ends amicably, either because we& #39;re not crazy enough to get into shouting matches with strangers or because we& #39;re friends. You& #39;re that guy from down the block with the immaculate lawn... you& #39;re that lady I keep seeing at both ShopRite and Target...
you& #39;re that kid who always flashes my peace sign back at me as you fly past on your bike. To me, living this way with you daily in my life since I was a baby, even though they& #39;re mild interactions... it makes you my people. It just does.
So when I see something unjust happen to you, it makes me angry. If I see you holding hands, it makes me feel good. If I see you cracking up, it makes me chuckle because I can tell it must be a good one.
It& #39;s kinda weird, but it feels like a few people have been working very hard to make us forget we& #39;re a people. Some of them might even see this thread and hurry to respond, to remind everybody about how much we& #39;re supposed to believe we hate each other.
It happens almost every thread, somebody wanting us to forget our quirky little bond or crap all over it like it& #39;s never been worth anything. That makes me want to cry, honestly. It makes me sick to my stomach that some of my own people are saying this about us...
While writing these thoughts, a crazy thing just happened: for half a second,  I almost went fishing for a new name. I almost forgot that there was already a word for our loud and whispering and boisterous and somber and bold and bashful and colorful group...
I don& #39;t know what else we are expected to call ourselves nowadays, so I guess we should just keep sticking with "Americans."  I really love you guys, *my people*, and I think most of you guys love me too.
