(Thread) In 2016 I did not have time for summer holidays but I did have extra money.
To still have something to look forward to, in 2017 me and my family went to Iceland.
A collegue told me there's also a boat sailing between Denmark and Iceland #Iceland @dmvdesign @hshrafndal
I knew then I could make this the untimate roadtrip. We own a 1972 Citroën DS in perfect technical condition. Full story (Dutch) can be found here: https://www.citroen-forum.nl/forums/viewthread/231758. I booked a year in advance so plenty of time to get the car prepared, google for attractions
Upgrade my photo equipment and buy a DJI Mavic Pro drone. I only posted fragments of that trip online so let's do it properly now. The trip starts by driving 1000 km through the night from The Netherlands, Germany and finally Denmark, reaching Uggerby mid-day
We had stormy skies coming in so we left the beach. We stayed the night in a recently renovated cottage to board the boat the next day.
The next day was just a 9 km drive to Hirtshals to embark the #Norröna of @LineSmyril. There was a nice variety of vehicles: expedition trucks, modified landrovers, campervans, motorbikes, a 1973 Porsche 911 and our DS. We're sailing for 47 hours along Norway & Shetland islands.
Time on the boat pass by quickly, walking around, leaving the kids with some playstations, seeing a movie and swimming in an indoor pool, also taking photographs on deck. Sunset is of course favorite to photograph
We sailed passed the Shetland Islands in the night and arrived for a short stop at the Faroër islands. I'll consider a stop-over in the future here as there are also plenty of special landscapes to experience here
#Thórshavn seems like a nice town with 19500 people living there. Some people left the boat, some people decided to sail with us to #Iceland. The route continued between the #Faroër Islands, an amazing landscape to sail between.
Leavnig the Faroër Islands
Arrival in #Iceland is the next day in a fjord in the town of
#Seyðisfjörður in North-East Iceland. Reykjavik and the airport is in the South-West end so entering the ringroad about halfway compared to Reykjavik. We have to get out of the fjord first though. @ThePhotoHour
After having cleared customs, it is on to #Egilsstaðir, the only main road out of the fjord.
#Egilsstaðir is located in a valley next to a long stretched lake. This town also connects the road from the ferry to the 1332 km long N1 ringroad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_1_(Iceland). 2nd panorama picture needs a click. #Iceland @ThePhotoHour @The_PhotoBattle
A scrap yard in #Egilsstaðir seen from our #Citroen DS #Iceland. We decided to cross the lake and go North-West. There was a warning sign there would not be a petrol pump for 163 km, in fact there is only desert. This is a strange experience coming from crowded Netherlands.
A waterfall underway and finally we reached the river that feeds the largest waterfall of Europe, #Dettifoss, there's a single lane bridge accross.
Our kids on the slope of the #Hrossaborg volcano. This volcano featured as a football stadium in the #TomCruise movie #Oblivion (which is entirely filmed in Iceland).
