WHAT WOMEN IN THE KPOP INDUSTRY HAVE TO GO THROUGH: EXPOSING THE MISTREATMENT, MISOGYNY AND DOUBLE STANDARD.

an unfortunately very long thread.
TW/ suicide, sexual themes, physical abuse, triggering events

these events are in no particular order, and please feel free to add more in the comments/qrts.

I will be continuing to add incidents as time goes on, its impossible for me to add everything in one go
SNSD
Also known as girls generation, a member of this group, Jessica Jung was touched inappropriately by the vice president of KBS on live broadcast.
SNSD
Another member of this group, Yoona, also was being harrassed, by a fellow idol, CNBLUE's Lee Jonghyun on stage.
STELLAR
Stellar, after disbanding in 2018, revealed that they were forced to have photoshoots with clothing that made them extremely uncomfortable. their company forced them to sexualize themselves. https://www.instagram.com/p/CGHFQLLnaPM/?igshid=uw8at6sj1qqi
GOO HARA
Goo Hara, former member of Kara, was physically abused by her ex-boyfriend. When she called out for help, the public instead called her an "attention whore" and attacker her for defending herself. Sadly, she passed away on November 24th 2019, by suicide. Rest in peace.
Here is a thread explaining the situation further: https://twitter.com/S0SHl4EVA/status/1266504968888111104
SONAMOO
Under TS Entertainment, members Nahyun and Sumin revealed that TSE had failed to pay their idols proper salaries, and has mistreated Sonamoo on multiple occasions, even threatening to cut water and electricity at their dorms.

APINK
In February of 2018, Apink’s naeun received backlash for posting a picture in which her phone case read “girls can do anything.” There was also a pack of cigarettes visible on the table in the photo. Many knetz hated on her for possibly smoking as well.
(G)I-DLE
During an interview, Minnie was visibly uncomfortable next to a man, who was moving closer to her even though she showed her discomfort. https://mobile.twitter.com/ohmytays/status/1294512893480730624
KIM SOHEE
Now member of the group NATURE, Kim Sohee had a rough debut story. While finding the right company, one company’s CEO had sexually harassed Sohee, asking her to be his wife, etc. The same company had an another restaurant business, where they made her and other +
trainees work there, unpaid, telling them they would debut if the restaurant business failed. Here is a video where she explains the situation further:
(time stamp 10:20 ~ 12:00)
BLACKPINK
Jennie was accused of being "lazy" on stage a while ago. she was slandered and hated to an unbelievable extent. later, it was revealed that she had an injury while performing, which is why she had limited energy on stage.
kpop fans absolutely tore her apart from this, and many more incidents of unprovoked hate have come from this 'incident'. Here is a video that explains the situation further (time stamp 8:13 ~ 9:15)
BLACKPINK
In the mv LOVESICK GIRLS, Jennie wore a nurse outfit to the lyrics "no doctor could help when I'm lovesick". some nurses in korea took offense to this, claiming it was "perpetuating the sexualization of nurses". Here is the outfit in question:
as you can see, there is nothing sexual about the outfit, yet she was criticized for it. YG has now deleted the scene from the mv.
RED VELVET
Recently (august 2020) Joy was under fire for posting an instagram post with her wearing a shirt that read “WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS”.
Joy was called selfish and accused of promoting feminism, and was bashed by many knetz.
TWICE
n August 11th 2020, Hayoung of APINK, Mina and Jihyo of Twice, Gugudan Seojeong, BESTie Uji, EXID's Jeong Hwa, and actress Kim Sae Ron were revealed to have joined an all-female soccer team, including non-celebrity women. Many knetz left negative comments +
EXID
Choreo censorship
When EXID released Up&Down, they had to censor the hip thrusting because it was too “provocative”, while boy groups were doing very similar dance moves, and got away with it.
MOMOLAND
Safety Shorts
Momoland’s members had to perform wearing extremely short skirts and pants, while not wearing any safety shorts.

ESNA
Ahh Oop!
A former artist under RBW (mamamoo, oneus, onewe company), eSna wrote and composed Ahh Oop, only for RBW to practically steal it from her. What was supposed to be her solo debut song, they made it into a collaboration song with MAMAMOO. RBW marketed +
as MAMAMOO's original song, and even went to the lengths of telling eSna to lose weight for promotions, and eventually told her to quit doing promotions because of comments on her appearance.
She talks about it more here:
MAMAMOO
Hwasa’s outfits
Hwasa’s outfits have been under fire of knetz very often.
she was criticized for going braless, wearing only a bra, and many more including:
NINE MUSES
Ryu sera was slapped by Star Empire’s CEO, and many other mistreatments were inflicted onto nine muses. More information can be found on their predebut documentary “Nine Muses of Star Empire” https://mobile.twitter.com/GRLGROUPARCHIVE/status/743774206542786561
RAINBOW
Lifting of their shirts in the choreography of “A” and it was banned, because it was TOO SEXUAL. https://twitter.com/pumpkin_kai/status/962386224773259264?s=20
DALSHABET

BERRY GOOD Johyun
Did a league of legends cosplay and received lots of backlash for being “too sexual” and “revealing,” lots of disagreement online over whether it was acceptable or not.
Netizens said she went “too far” and looked like a “porn actress,” among other things.
Whether it was Johyun’s decision to wear those clothes, I think the public’s outcry was unnecessary and sexist.

there is no specific group/artist for this one, but i feel it is worth mentioning. It is hard enough to be given creative freedom in the kpop industry, especially for a woman. Much evidence, including testimonies from idols such as (), show this. Using KOMCA credits as an example
The first photo is the list of the most copyrighted idols, and the second is the most copyrighted female idols. As you can see in the first picture, the chart is overly dominated by men. This is from January, and if it's correct, you can see about 80 idols +
there are only 12 women there, of which 3 are soloists. The second photo shows the female idols with most copyrights. Compared to the quantity of men, keep in mind that several of those women have been in the industry for years, like Miryo (who has been there since 2006), +
while you can see members of stray kids and ateez (groups of 2017 and 2018) have many more credits than several of them.
This is not to discredit men but to show how women in the industry are often not given the opportunity to write/compose/be credited.
another thing worth mentioning is the unwanted sexualisation of many female idols. From creating vulgar images/videos of kpop idols, to actual interview hosts sexualising them, the list never ends.
MAMAMOO
Similarly to Jennie's situation, When MAMAMOO’s teasers for gogobebe were being released, a korean feminist account accused them of pedophilia and promoting lolita culture, from an innocent clip/look.
LOONA
from being starved to lose weight and music they were working on getting deleted, LOONA has been mistreated by many. here is a video that goes more in depth:
