A thread of my favourite lines in chronological order from the cinematic masterpiece that is 1917
“Blake. Blake! Pick a man. Bring your kit.”
“10 bob says we’re going up.”
“I’m not taking that bet.”
“Why? Cuz you know I’m right?”
“No. Cuz you haven’t got 10 bob.”
“Friday? Well, well, well. None of us were right. This idiot thought it was Tuesday.”
“Nothing like a scrap of ribbon to cheer up a widow.”
“Wake up, Kilgour. Bloody waste of space.”
“Age before beauty.”
“So do you want to go back?”
“Just fire the f—ing flare.”
“Yes it does. And it’s not just a bit of tin. It’s got a ribbon on it 😌
Literally just Scho’s face when his voice breaks when he says “When I knew I had to go back and I knew they might never see me-“
“Put me down, you bastard!”
“Let’s just sit. Let me sit. Start on without me; I’ll catch up.”
“Am I dying?”
“...Yes. Yes, I think you are.”
“Will you write to my mum for me? [...] Tell her I wasn’t scared.”
“Hey, driver. How about you try to keep it on the bloody road for a change!?”
“Not another bloody tree 😒
“Lance Corporal, if you do make it to Colonel MacKenzie, make sure there are witnesses [...] some men only want the fight.”
“What is her name?”
“Je ne sais pas.”
“Who is her mother?”
“...Je ne sais pas.”
The six tolls of the bell in Écoust
Scho’s wracking gasps and sobs as he crawls over the bodies and out of the river
“...to find the Devons...”
“What’s that mate?”
“I have to find the Devons.”
“...We’re the Devons.”
“Major? Stand them down.”
“Hope is a dangerous thing.”
“There’s only one way this war ends: last man standing.”
“The 8th? You must know my brother!”
“I was sent here with him.”
“Tom’s here?! Where is he?”
“He saved my life.”
“Well, I’m glad you were with him. Thank you, Will.”
“Come home to us.”
End of Thread // Honestly, it was hard to only focus on the lines and not write every single little detail that I adore. There’s so much to analyze and every little piece is used for a larger purpose in the plot, development, and storyline but that’s for another time ;)
