Was just reading @TheDevilsDen and 2 names randomly came up, and if anyone ever puts together a doc about Duke's 3rd act under K, these dudes are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Duke basketball as minor characters with MAJOR significance ... Brian Zoubek and Myck Kabongo.
Duke had a good team in 2010. A LOT better than history gives them credit for being. But man, Zoubek came out of nowhere in that home game vs. Maryland and was a monster for the last two months of the year. And I mean it when I say out of nowhere.
Zoubek had 6 games out of 151 career games with 10+ rebounds. Including the 17 rebounds he had against Maryland, he finished the season with 10+ rebounds in 9 of the last 15. OR% jumped from 16.4% to 21.4% (best in the NCAA) from '09 to '10. L.O.L.
Brian Zoubek rebounds by season:

Freshman year - 70
Sophomore year - 86
Junior year - 127
Last 15 games at Duke - 152

And it wasn't just playing time. Dude only ever had one 30+ minute game in his entire career. The 2010 NCAA Championship game.
So why is Zoubek important? Without Zoubek becoming whatever the hell was over those last 15 games in '10, Duke's not winning that title. And y'all remember the big talk of 2010? Harrison Barnes? USA Basketball? 2009 UNC? If Duke doesn't win in 2010, K's not at Duke in 2020.
I'm not saying K's getting fired. I'm not even saying K isn't there in '11. He probably is. I'm just saying things were noisy back then. Noisy enough to make a guy want to go do other things before too long. And he's DEFINITELY not there for '15 which brings me to the other name.
Myck Kabongo was THE GUY to take over for Kyrie and finish out that Austin Rivers class. He decommitted from Texas and about to head to Durham but there was a coach on staff who preferred another guy instead. That coach won the argument. The other guy ended up at Duke.
The other guy, of course, was Quinn Cook. Cook's obviously a major figure in Duke's story, but there's a lot to infer from what else happened. The coach who preferred Cook stuck around. The other coaches bounced. The one who stayed recruited a few guys you've probably heard of.
So if you want to find two guys who you could change their stories and it probably ends up with Duke having two fewer banners and a different coach on the sidelines in 2020, it's Brian Zoubek and Myck Kabongo. Somebody make that movie. I'd watch it.
