This is for D&D fans who also enjoy other TTRPGs, especially Mage.

I'm playing in @caudelac's rules-lite Mage: the Awakening hack. There are Paths and Orders, but I'm having such a hard time working backward from my Path to a *person* who is interesting and cool.

Anyone else have difficulty working out a character concept in a game without classes?

I've talked to Rabbit about this a lot and I'm still trying to understand my problem. I feel obligated by... I dunno, my gaming culture in the broad?... to aim low in starting status.

Like... I don't know how to give myself permission to make my character urban-fantasy Cool or thriller-novel Cool or whatever.

I don't really have this problem in D&D, where character class, subclass, and level strongly suggest a target degree of Cool.

Beyond that, it's straight-up choice paralysis.

I've created a character: a Mastigos (Space, mainly) who makes money and travels the world by gaming the frequent-flyer and first-month-free systems. He uses this freedom to investigate paranormal incidents.

I just can't seem to get this to resolve into a character I can play with confidence, and everything else sounds bad too.

Trying to imagine myself being, or portraying, someone *interesting* in a modern-day-adjacent setting is apparently almost impossible for me.

I guess I'm hoping I'm not alone here.

As with all of my gaming threads, this ends with:

End concentration camps in the US (and worldwide)
Abolish and prosecute ICE
Black lives matter
Trans rights are human rights
Wear your mask
