Here's another thing about streaming/footage, coming from an intelligence background: You're only as secure as your least secure actor. I'll try to illustrate why in this thread. (1/9)
Imagine that Jill does more than one protest in a day. She does a peaceful march in the morning, and attends a DA march in the evening. Jill blocks up, but bloc is not perfect. Maybe Jill can't afford more than one pair of shoes. (2/9)
A streamer catches a lot of footage of Jill at the peaceful march. They get whole body shots, they get her voice, they get her face. But it's fine, because Jill isn't breaking the law. (3/9)
And then a different journalist films some DA, and they're very diligent about blocking faces before posting. There's no way for the police to magically extrapolate a face from a black square. (4/9)
Unfortunately for Jill, the intel officer handling her case is able to identify that the figure performing DA that evening is of the same height and build, and is wearing the same shoes as the person filmed that morning. They cross-reference the footage, and ID Jill. (5/9)
A few weeks later, officers show up at Jill's door at 4 in the morning and arrest her. At this point, it's too late. There's no way to de-arrest Jill. (6/9)
It's unlikely that SPD or the feds have the resources to build a file on every single protester who breaks a window, but what if Jill is an organizer? What if Jill is a vulnerable person? There are cities that have lost all their organizers to this kind of op. (7/9)
Incidentally, this is Foucalt's boomerang; these techniques were honed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's not just shoes, they can examine the way you walk, the length of your legs relative your torso. (8/9)
We live in a surveillance state. There are cameras everywhere. But I strongly recommend not making the polices' lives easier. Looking at grainy security camera footage is way harder than a crisp livestream. (9/9)
Oh bonus: Cops can also watch streams DURING protests and use it to anticipate routes and other tactics, which puts us at a severe tactical disadvantage, all risk of arrest aside.
