Additionally, it negatively impacts the women's analysis of sexism in their country. Instead of observing the economic, geopolitical and cultural reality of her country, a woman may copy the "solutions" of liberal feminism and blindly apply it. For example, my country the Bahamas https://twitter.com/metalheadfem/status/1316019841208205317
We have a underlying prostitution problem. It's an under the rug issue There has been little in-depth research on the matter. However, we know that there are two major forms local and sex tourism. Both forms are because of economics status. My country heavily condemns the act
because of religious belief (mostly the prostitutes but not the johns or pimps). Due to exposure to liberal feminism, people who broke out of the influence of religious thought have brought into the sex work as empowerment and sex as a human need. On the other hand, people who
view prostitution through the religious or capitalist lens have blamed laziness and godlessness for it. Both views do nothing but hurt those in the industry. However, using a class analysis, the problem is the massive wealth gap in the Bahamas, weak safety net, and high cost of
living. Women and girls do "sexual favors" for men to have their basic needs (Food, transport, clothes) met. This is why its known primarily as transactional sex here. It's common knowledge that some schoolgirls have sex with bus drivers to get to school and back.
Using the sex work as empowerment framework, these girls are empowered because they're using one of the few resources to have (their body) to make money. In some Bahamians' minds, the girls are using the bus drivers and the bus drivers better stop before a cry of rape ruins them.
Then there is the sex tourism. While we are not a major destination compared to other countries like the Dominican Republic, it is a common practice. Since the Bahamas is tourism dependent, we are reluctant to call out tourist publicly (unless they're gay). This leads to problem
being the prostitutes and godlessness (using the religious beliefs) or nonexistent (using the sex work is work). As a result, the true problem, first world people exploiting third work people, is overlooked and the women and girls in the industry don't get significant help.
