Real World Challenges in enrollment of Minorities in Clinical Trials.

Over last 2 weeks I consented 5 minorities for different clinical trials for plasma cell disorder @utswcancer. Next 5 tweets of real world examples. @theNCI @FDAOncology
1/5 - AA male in mid-50's with more than 10 lines of treatment of Myeloma, a single father of 11 yr old. Enrolled on Phase I trial, need a whole day of PK/PD, come three 3xweek- labs. On pain meds (for MM), can't drive to clinic visits. @utswcancer CRO👍. Responding Rx
2/5: AA Male s/p ASCT for #mmsm, work 50hrs/week, widower, driving distance, no family, did transplant with hired help. Consented for maintenance study but cancelled - financial hardship, misinformed by community member that trials are hoaxâ˜č. Can get better rx outside trial !
3/5 AA male relapsed early post ASCT were outcomes are dissimal without trials. Lives 10hrs from Comp Cancer Center, single, will loose job if any more holidays. @utswcancer - got him on #CAR T trial being leucopheresed today ! Lots ofđŸ’”aid, convience employers, đŸ€žon CART journey
As an individual doctor, I felt defeated ! I failed at so many levels, despite my small success. We need societal changes, financial measures, policy changes, community education and team work if we want REAL CHANGE. @ASCO @ASH_hematology @NIHDirector @BarackObama @MichelleObama
@bmsnews @Merck @GSK @TakedaPharma @Amgen @pfizer @JanssenUS et al. Y'all need to work together as industry leaders while academia and public continues to bring change.
