I don’t know why it’s difficult for Black folks in the U.S. to confront the fact that we have little to no idea about what is happening on the continent and most of the world. I don’t get the defensive when it’s objectively true.
Also, most of the critique is directed towards diaspora Nigerians from folks in Nigeria. It is objectively true that we have very little information and are very inactive when it comes to demonstrating international support. There’s been several uprisings in Africa this year
Nigerian Twitter is huge. That’s really the only reason we receiving this information and see people reacting. Nigeria has over 200 million people so the hyper-visibility is realz
What is happening in Nigeria is a big fucking deal especially because of the way Nigeria is positioned on the international stage + the continent as an economic and political powerhouse. It is a big deal that in the era of Black Lives Matter that Nigerians want to #EndSarsNow
Folks have been protesting police violence for the last 5 months in the U.S. and the increased repression, militarization and policing in the U.S. is directly connected to the increased militarization in Nigeria and across the country.
There is a deep hatred for the youth. Africa has the largest unemployed youth population in the world. The number of young people is growing. What is the state to do with this group of people who were born into violent social and economic conditions and are now being blamed?
They need to find ways to contain, repress, eliminate these young people and as was in the U.S. ,COVID-19 has left many people unemployed and further disillusioned about the state and has pushed thousands to the streets. They have been demonizing youth to justify criminalization
I really don't think people understand the reach of the U.S. empire and just how much America is imported around the world. It is true Black folks are hypervisible within the U.S. and lack concrete power. More of a reason folks should be amplifying what is happening on the ground
