why pitting cardi and nicki against each other feeds into deep rooted misogyny, a very much needed thread:
first, an intro. i have been wanting to make a thread about this or at least talk about this issue, not specifically with cardi and nicki, but in general, for a very, very long time. however i wasn't really able to put into words what i wanted to say, but now that i have- (1/?)
a bit more of a platform here, and after being inspired by @theestallion's letter to the new york times, i have decided i'm ready to talk about it. i also anticipate a lot of initial outcry from both the barbz and the bardis. this is an understandable first reaction- (2/?)
but please try your best to understand where i am coming from, not only just for you or me but for the sake of your faves and the black community. ok now with that out of the way, let's get into the very long thread that i'm about to write. (3/?)
from the beginning of the rap industry, it was a mostly male dominated industry -- women did not have much of a large place in rap due to misogyny, which has been a big part of history in music in general. when we hear about influential rappers such as (4/?)
tupac, NAS, biggie, jay-z, and kanye, all of which are male rappers who dominated the industry and impacted the industry - we do not see people pitting them against each other, at least, not to a degree in which women in rap are pit up against each other time and time- (5/?)
again. now let's look back at nicki and cardi. nicki and cardi are both easily two of the most influential people in rap right now, both for their own individual reasons. if we look at their fandoms, they are both extremely dedicated, and the two women are- (6/?)
almost always compared at any chance they get. why is this? this is because of the deeply rooted, perhaps even internalized, misogyny in the rap industry. it's almost as if people won't allow more than women to succeed in rap, taking any chances- (7/?)
possible to stop them or put them down. pitting two very fierce and unstoppable women against each other and distracting them from their success to try and compare them to another is an amazing way at doing such. this doesn't even solely apply to cardi and nicki either- (8/?)
because people often use other ways to put down women in the industry, such as attempting to cancel doja cat, making fun of megan when she got shot by tory lanez, or putting down flo milli and disregarding her talent. there are so many tactics that people, especially men, (9/?)
use in order to suppress women (especially black women) in the industry. pitting cardi and nicki against each other was just one of the many tactics that were perpetuated and are further being enforced by their fandoms, and by everyday listeners. this is why it's time to- (10/?)
end the cardi vs. nicki debate. they are both two highly talented, amazing WOC who both have dedicated themselves to the industry. the rap industry would be NOTHING without women like them, and there are so many talented women in the industry that help it to flourish. (11/?)
pitting two very talented women against each other does absolutely nothing to benefit either of your faves. it's just petty. and it also helps add to the misogynistic culture surrounding rap and it's time we appreciate ALL women in rap, and not feeding into a system which- (12/?)
which was created to contribute to the downfall of women in rap and prevent them from their overall success. barbz, bardis, hotties, clittens, whatever fandom you may be in - please keep this in mind. let's work together, not tear each other down. (13/13)
