So, in a backhanded way, Trump did do us a favor. He showed that most of our protections against a dictatorship are built on trust. Trust that no one will abuse the power we’ve given the president, both through the Constitution and by legislation. /1
It’s a trust based not only on the person we elect to the Oval Office, but also a trust placed in our legislators. /2
And we now know neither Trump nor the Republican Party are worthy of that trust. /3
Accordingly, as a nation, we really do have to tighten up our rules, both in the Constitution and with our legislation. One thing that is an absolute must, is closing the loop on emergency powers Congress granted the president back in the 1970s. /4
Immigration Courts should no longer be part of the Executive Branch, where a corrupt president and attorney General can manipulate judges. /5
We need a power to discipline a sitting president that actually works. We have seen that impeachment and removal doesn’t, so long as the president’s party has 35 seats. /6
Representation in the Senate needs to change. No longer should voters Montana, Wyoming and Idaho get a greater say in judicial nominations than voters in California and New York. The Senate should now be based proportionally on population. /7
Most of all, the electoral college needs to be abolished once and for all. And, the president should be required to receive a majority of popular votes. If that requires a run-off between the top 2 candidates, so be it. /8
To be frank, to break the power hold of our two major political parties, the nation should adopt the non-partisan primary system that Louisiana employs. /finis
