(1/11) Most of the traditional DKC cast has noticeably gone since Donkey Kong has been bounced around post-Rare

It really is the old-school Nintendo ethos behind it all.

There is feeling that if your team or studio did not create something, you should create your own thing
(2/11) Hence why Super Mario Land is filled with obscure new characters rather than Bowser and the Koopa Troopas
(3/11) Or why Waluigi has never been in a Wario game.

Tanabe definitely pushed this.
(4/11) So you isolate the core characters that transcend as "the brand" and use them, and create new casts around them.
(5/11) That might still be the mindset at Nintendo, but K. Rool has definitely "transcended" now. Which, is good news for the Kremlings as a whole.
(6/11) Namco and Paon were able to skirt this since they were outside of Nintendo working with the license
(7/11) whereas Nintendo EAD and Retro Studios were directly under the thumb of Nintendo corporate culture.
(8/11) But Donkey Kong is a bit of a unique circumstance...

As in, the originator studio behind most of the characters is now owned by the competition, and are no longer making DK games...
(9/11) The fans did show that there is a tremendous love for the DKC cast via K. Rool in the Smash Ballot...
(10/11) And since so many younger staff at Nintendo EPD are Super Donkey Kong / Donkey Kong Country fans...

There is hope.
(11/11) I do think things are going to stabilize from here on out though.

We will have a foundation for Donkey Kong once again going forward instead of perpetual tonal shifts, art styles, and cast changes.
