RE: What& #39;s "Canon" in MHA
I feel like most peoples concerns about what& #39;s "canon" center around a few things:
1. Concerns about if they "have to" read/watch something
2. Concerns about theory building
3. Concerns about power levels
4. Concerns about shipping

I& #39;ve seen lots of debate about what is "canon" and I& #39;ve gotten messages about it when I& #39;ve posted things about the movies, novels, CDs etc. I& #39;m sorry if you were someone who messaged me because I probably never replied. I tried to put my thoughts into this thread though...
Sorry in advance for being annoying. This is just my random opinion and mini rant which no one asked for

First off, there is no officially released list of canon and non-canon chapters / episodes / books etc. It& #39;s not like Star Wars or Marvel where things get official labels like that.
So far the manga is the ultimate canon. At the end of the day that& #39;s the original story.

I feel like because of the 4 concerns I listed at the top of the thread, people then endlessly debate the "canon" level of the rest of MHA content. Vigilantes & TUM are supervised by Horikoshi, but how much? The anime has bits of original or changed content, what about that? etc
I get it. We know Horikoshi had a big hand in All Might& #39;s backstory in the first movie, in what happened at the end of the second movie, we know he checks all the Vigilante chapters etc. So you can kind of list what& #39;s "more" canon or "less" canon...
But I don& #39;t feel like extensively debating & ranking spinoff content. I don& #39;t see why it& #39;s important because I don& #39;t think the 4 concerns are a big deal. I have a loose ranking in my head based on what we know Horikoshi has been more closely involved with but I enjoy it all

My personal view & enjoyment of the series for now is that the manga is the ultimate canon & everything else is like adjacent canon or canon-until-proven-otherwise. Plenty of extra content adds to the world, fuels new theories, & gives little ship moments. It& #39;s fun. That& #39;s it

I& #39;ve heard people in the Star Wars fandom say that Star Wars is like pizza or beer-- even when it& #39;s bad it& #39;s still pretty good and if there& #39;s some on the table you& #39;ll take it no matter what. My Hero Academia is like that for me

My friends make serious theories and come up with cool fight ideas with content from everything from the movies to the light novels. And they celebrate and build fan content off ship moments in everything from TUM to the drama CDs. And I do the same

No one asked but I& #39;m also going to post my total personal thoughts and opinions on these concerns about what& #39;s canon:
1. Concerns about if they "have to" read/watch something
2. Concerns about theory building
3. Concerns about power levels
4. Concerns about shipping

1. Concerns about if they "have to" read/watch something
To this I say, read and watch what you want. If you only want to watch the main anime or only want to read the main manga that& #39;s fine. That& #39;s what I do with 95% of the manga & anime series I read & watch.

Do the movies, novels, other spin offs and content provide more background & world building? Sure. But this is entertainment and the main manga or main anime still hold everything you need to be entertained. This is for fun, you don& #39;t "have" to watch/read anything.
2. Concerns about theory building
We& #39;re all just fans theorizing for fun, trying to guess & catch hints to future plots or current mysteries. If you only want to use the official main "most" canon manga to theorize that& #39;s fine but if people want to use other content… why not?

Aside from general world-building & character relationships there are plenty of specific things seen outside of the manga that can effect theories about who the traitor is, who the OFA predecessors might be, where the story is going, etc.
Each of the OFA predecessors gets an assigned color in the anime & movies, pro heroes & Tsukauchi get more backstory in Vigs, Nine who is seen in one manga panel gets a whole story in a movie, Shirakumo gets more backstory in Vigs etc…
So yeah... why not use spinoff stuff in theory building? You don& #39;t have too but if you want to, I say go ahead. We& #39;re all just having fun here haha.
3. Concerns about power levels
If you want to argue power levels that& #39;s fine. But at the end of the day this is a Shonen Jump manga, all the characters will be as powerful or as weak as they need to be when they need to be. If you know what I mean

I love discussing potential fights and team ups and such-- why not reference the movies or games or OVAs etc? It& #39;s all in good fun, the powers are fantastical so if you& #39;re imagining potential fights why not use everything we& #39;ve seen and whatever you can imagine

4. Concerns about shipping
Ships don& #39;t need to be canon. And even when some do become end game canon pairings and others don& #39;t, it still doesn& #39;t matter. People can keep shipping other things. This is not a new phenomenon that MHA created. Just let people have fun.

I could rant for an hour about the hypocrisy & outright bullying I& #39;ve seen on social media over ships and what& #39;s "canon" or not but I& #39;ll refrain

Anyway I don& #39;t really know what I& #39;m trying to say, I& #39;m sorry if you messaged me asking about the "canon" status of something and I never replied. My thoughts are mostly in this thread now.
Basically the manga is the main story and this is all for fun, if you& #39;re really into it why not enjoy the spinoffs too? Watch or read what you want to, theorize however you want to, enjoy ships and little interactions if you want to. Just have fun. Okay
