This is a thread on starting use twitter, after being an intermittent lurker for a few years.
Two aims right now:
- Learn to use twitter more actively.
- Build relationships that might be useful.

I always optimise for my life, not my business.
But I've been reading how-to threads by people like @brandonthezhang and @thisiskp_ , and watching the growth of accounts like @anthilemoon and @CarvingThought.
Below inspired by them, designed for me.

Never visit the twitter home screen. I actually think it's pretty good if you want to consume content and look for serendipitous interest on here. But not for my present purposes.
No notifications. For anything. Ever.
Only use twitter on a desktop PC. Tweetdeck is a pinned tab on chrome (my "routine work" browser). I visit my routine-work twice most days.

I mostly use four lists. Each of these has a group of people in that I'm watching with a slightly different intent.
I visit them in this order, and don't always reach (3) in the time I put to this.
Follow (one-click) is mostly my clearing-house for periodic sorting.

1. “First up" - accounts that model how to use twitter. And, that don't draw my thoughts in directions I don't want to go daily.
It's the first list I see on tweetdeck, and always teaches me something or opens a question in my mind.

Five commonalities in the accounts on that list:
- interested in learning broadly
- largely non-political on here
- often say "yes, and" or riff on other people's comments
- not regularly flat-out wrong
- write with clarity

2. "Amplify”. Sub 5k accounts who I've seen offering something of value to my type of people.
Intent: Do what little I can to amplify these. Engage in conversation, retweet, keep them in mind when speaking to others. That kind of thing.
Start with kindness.

3. “Adjacent peers” who I want to get to know over time.
Intent: Market-research. And, see who I'm consistently aligned with for later (affiliate-marketing, collaborations, hiring them for projects).
Chat in replies now to start that process.

4. "My tribes". Popular accounts.
Intent: Comment on their tweets when I have something to add - generously intended questions and positive comments only, no arguments.

There's a few other lists, too, to keep track of people in other fields I might be interested in another time.
Will post about content plans and my teaching business sometime soon.
