Yesterday the #AgricultureBill returned to the House of Commons. Last night’s vote saw the MPs vote against an amendment previously passed in the Lords to #SaveOurStandards, despite a rebellion of 14 Conservative MPs. What does this mean?

It’s the clearest signal yet that the Government do not intend to uphold their election manifesto commitment to maintain the UK’s high environmental protection, animal welfare and food standards in trade negotiations (2/5)
It’s bad news for consumers, British farmers and for nature’s recovery in the UK. If food standards are lowered, British farmers will have to compete with farmers from other countries, who use intensive farming methods and chemicals that are banned in the UK (3/5)
In order to compete British farmers will be forced to go down the same road – leading to an even greater loss of wildlife across the British countryside (4/5)
If the vote from last night is sustained, it will result in a ‘race to bottom’ in welfare and environmental practices. We’ll be watching closely and will continue to stand up for our wildlife when it is under threat. More
