Our much loved statue of Robert Stephenson, normally on the Euston piazza, has gone into storage. This means the grade II listed statue will be safeguarded while HS2 work continues at the station

The 1.5 tonne statue was lifted manually as part of a controlled move and in keeping with heritage industry best practice. It will return to the station once the redevelopment has been completed
Thanks to @CostainGroup and @SkanskaUKplc working on behalf of @hs2, for gaining special planning permission from @CamdenCouncil for the statue’s relocation
We also worked with @RailwayHeritage and @HistoricEngland – so the statue benefited from the right care, in line with specialist guidelines
Robert Stephenson was an early railway pioneer: his achievements included the development of the London-Birmingham Railway
Opened in 1838, it was the first inter-city railway into London and ran from Euston
It enabled significant expansion of railways in the UK
The statue was created in 1870 by Baron Carlo Marochetti and listed in 1974
It was originally located between the two Portland Stone lodges which still exist today. The statue was moved for the opening of the rebuilt Euston station in 1968. It had been in its most recent location in the piazza since 2008
It was gifted to the London and North Western Railway by the Institute of Civil Engineers @ICE_engineers
