The US refuses to recognize what the pandemic makes plain: a society pools its risk. Our trust has been so shattered that no one is willing to do that. So many of the comments responding to this thread are complaints about teacher unions.
I would argue that unions could actually provide the best counterweight to the individualistic strain we see at play here — unions can help us find a collective response to a collective problem.
