Nicki Minaj has earned her first Grammy nomination at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, the self proclaimed Queen of Rap was nominated for the ‘Best Rap Performance By A Duo or Group’ category for the song ‘My Chick Bad’ as a featured artist
The song was moderately succesful. Peaking at #11 on the Hot 100 despite it’s popularized music video, the song only got moderate acclaim. It eventually lost to Jay-Z ‘s & Swiss Beatz smash hit song ‘On to the next one’ which received widespead acclaim. It’s a fair loss for Minaj
Nicki’s scored her first big category category award a year later in the category ‘Best New Artist’. She eventually lost to the highly acclaimed and multi talented indie band ‘Bon Iver’. Garbz tend to call this loss for Nicki Minaj a snub but I’ll explain to you why it isn’t
Bon Iver released their highly anticipated self titled studio album in 2011, with many music publications placing the album at number one on their year end lists. The album opened at #2 on the Billboard 200 and was a commercial success. The album also scored a 88 metacritc score
which indicated ‘universal acclaim’. Bon Iver won their Best New Artist award fairly based on the statistics. Nicki on the other hand had a commercially huge era but simply couldnt compete with band artistically which resulted in a fair loss for the rapper.
Going over her Pink Friday era nominations, Nicki scored an additional two nominations in the rap category. However Kanye West rightfully beat all of Nicki Minaj’s noms out with his legendary fifth studio album ‘MBDTF’ which is often called named as one of the best albums ever.
Moving all the way up to 2015, Nicki’s next nominations would be in the Pop Category for her contribution on Jessie J’s hit song ‘Bang Bang’ the song received mixed responses from critics and lost to Christina Aguileira’s acclaimed hit ‘Say Something’. Again a fair loss for Minaj
Nicki also scored a nomination for her #2 single ‘Anaconda’ in the Rap Song category. This is mostly because of a lack of rap singles being released in 2014 which resulted in the horrid song receiving a nod. Nicki lost to Kendrick Lamar, which is understandable since he is K-Dot.
Moving up to the 58th Annual Grammys (still no wins in sight) Nicki scored a surprising 3 nominations for her third studio album ‘The PinkPrint’. The album only received generally positive reviews with a overall metacritic score of 70 with mediocre commercial success.
Nicki, once again, lost all her nominations to Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick released his third studio album ‘TPAB’ which is regarded to as one of the best rap albums of all time. He scored a well deserved 11 nominations that night including ‘Album of the Year’.
Once again, Nicki had no realistic chance of beating out Kendrick Lamar’s classic To Pimp A Butterfly, which resulted in a fair loss.
This concludes all of Nicki Minaj’s Grammy nominations to date. Her fandom tries to make excuses for Nicki never having received a Grammy award saying she is ‘blackballed’ when in reality she couldnt win due to the harsh competition of better albums winning.
In reality we all know that albums like Watch the Throne, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy & To Pimp a Butterly (albums Nicki lost to) have contributed more to Hiphop than Nicki ever could. Saying Pink Friday era deserved a Grammy more than Kanye in 2010 for example is a lie.
I want to thank the @RecordingAcad for making the wise choice of letting talent win instead of commerical succes. Nicki however stands a chance of winning a embarrasing Latin Grammy for her poor contribution on Karol G’s succesful hit song Tusa. Does she stand a chance Garbz??
