🚨THREAD - Today @mhclg published Operating Principles for dormitory style winter night shelters in England in light of the pandemic 🚨Here are our thoughts:
1. This advice took far too long to publish but it does provide more clarity for winter shelters and having called for this advice for 6 months, now that it is here, HJ feels we should listen to it
2. The clinical position, set out by PHE in the Operating Principles and elsewhere by leading clinicians is that infection risk is much higher in communal night shelters than in self contained accommodation, no one should ignore this [excerpt below]
3. The advice does not call for the re-opening of night shelters, it says as a last resort in some circumstances it might be an option local authorities have to consider [excerpt below]
4. HJ believes that the risks outweigh the benefits of operating dormitory style night shelters this year and we will be supporting projects to find and fund safe, self-contained accommodation
5. The government is making a ÂŁ2m pot available for shelters to bid to fund safe alternatives to night shelters. We will confirm details on this over the coming week. END
