Savanna’s Act, named after Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, a 22-year-old pregnant Spirit Lake tribal member from North Dakota who was found murdered in 2017, requires federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement to update and create protocols to address missing and murdered…

The bill requires for the U.S. Department of Justice to provide training to law enforcement agencies on data entry, make aware and educate the public on the new data system, help tribes and Native American communities enter information into the database.

Native American women experience some of the highest rates of homicide, according to the Center for Disease and Control and Prevention.
In a 2008 research study, the Department of Justice found that in some communities Native American women are killed at more than 10 times the national average.
