HOW TO TAMPON [ an informative thread with (non-graphic) pictures! ]
if you’re interested in trying tampons out but you’re scared/don’t know where to start, read this thread !!!
let me just preface this by saying that if you use pads, that is perfectly fine and valid! some people prefer that over tampons for plenty of reasons that rly aren’t any of my business!!
this is rly just for ppl who only never tried tampons bc they’re scared of or confused by them, so they stick with “simpler” pads ,, i just want to remove some tampon stigma and explain how to use them effectively n with minimal/no pain !
here are just a few personal SUBJECTIVE reasons why i prefer tampons:
- much less discomfort from sitting in blood
- less risk of staining clothes and underwear
- don’t feel blood leaving my body
- SLEEP/lying down is much more comfy
- no weird pad wedgie
- no stickiness
also note: the experience of putting a tampon inside of you is NOT the same experience as have a penis, dildo, or anything else like that inside you! you can’t “lose your virginity” to a tampon! and sex shouldn’t even be compared to menstrual care because they are v different!
FIRST THINGS FIRST! tampons shouldn’t hurt you! if they do, you either 1. have the wrong size for your current flow, or 2. applied it incorrectly. i’ll address both these problems and how to solve them!
PART 1. wrong size — if u didn’t know, tampons come in sizes to match your flow! usually i see 3: light (for a light flow), regular (for a normal flow), and super (for a heavy flow). certain brands may sell a super plus and even an ultra for extra heavy flows!
needless to say if you have a light flow and you’re using a tampon for heavy flow, you would dealing with the great pain of the cotton against ur vaginal walls :( or if you use a light tampon for a heavy flow, you could be having discomfort due to the amount of blood soaking thru
see the picture below? imagine needing a junior tampon because you have a light flow, but trying to stuff a super plus in there :( it’ll hurt ! don’t do that !
ALSO!! during one period cycle, a person’s flow can vary. it can go from light to heavy or heavy to light or normal to light: it all depends on the person! for this reason, it’s crucial to purchase all the correct tampons to match your flow.
luckily, many tampon brands sell assorted size boxes such as the images pictured below
note: if you have NO idea about the heaviness of your flow, you can find out here or use the images below as a guide! https://www.everydayhealth.com/womens-health/menstruation/making-sense-menstrual-flow/
hehehe break for period jokes
PART 2. incorrect application— now that you’ve got the right size tampon, time to use it !!! let’s get one thing straight ok!! a vagina is not made of glass!! it’s a very tough organ! trust ur body!
a tampon is not supposed to hurt or tear your hymen or rly do anything EXCEPT for collecting blood :)
applying a tampon (with pictures)

this is what a tampon looks like! the thing on the left is called an applicator and the white thing on the right is the actual tampon!
when you take the tampon out of it’s packaging, you’ll only see the applicator but it’s okay! the tampon is inside of it ! see the string ? :)
next, locate your vaginal entrance! (don’t be scared or creeped out at your body! you have to be comfy with it in order for this to work:) and sitting helps!) and slowly push the top half of applicator into yourself. you shouldn’t be feeling much at this point.
make sure you’ve got a good index finger-thumb grasp on the edge of the top half and push the bottom half ALL THE WAY into the top half. this action puts the tampon inside your body. you will be able to feel it in you, but you should not be in pain !!!!
finally, you pull the applicator out! it should look like the after picture below when it comes out. if all went well, the tampon is in there comfortably and the string should still be hanging out of you. tuck it to the side and you’re good to go!
by the way! you can pee with a tampon in and you can swim with a tampon in! however for sex, it’s best to remove it so it doesn’t get lodged too far up your vaginal canal
and there it is! congrats on ur new tampon knowledge! i’m no expert but i tried to make this as graspable as possible. pls rt!!!! and pls if any questions please comment or dm !! :)) END OF THREAD
