In my opinion friends was the show that made me laugh. In friends there were also very emotional scenes like Ross cheating on Rachel or when Rachel kissed Ross after seeing the porm video. Totally love those scenes, but I think sadly there were very little of them.

HIMYM on the other hand just has more depth and there are a lot of those incredibly emotional moments which really makes you think hard about life. At some level we can relate so much to Ted. The. Rawness and depth in episodes.

So while I like the characters of friends more. HIMYM storyline was much stronger and teaches you but about life.
So imo although the idea of both the shows are similar, you simply cannot compare them to each other,

Friends imo is more about cheering you up and loving the characters and wanting to see where they get in life, and HIMYM is more about the storyline and the purity of emotions (pain,loss,live, friendship, loneliness), which you as a watcher also feel.
