Most of this thread is going to talk about color theory and the way it is used in the MV!
The three main colors featured in Serendipity are blue, yellow, and white.
In the world of Serendipity, here are what I believe the colors to represent ->
Blue: depth, stability, faith, calm, health
Yellow: freshness, joy, optimism, enlightenment, curiosity
White: safety, purity
Yellow: freshness, joy, optimism, enlightenment, curiosity
White: safety, purity
We first meet Jimin in a blue tinted room (you could argue it’s blue-green but I am calling it Blue). He seems to be waiting for something. The blue room represents the stability of loneliness. It is safe, but it won’t bring him what he needs.
We then see him hiding under white sheets. This is another safe space, holding a comfortable pureness.
When Jimin finally reaches out to touch the yellow cactus, he is transported to another universe. The yellow in Serendipity represents the joy of love, and when Jimin pricks his finger on it, he is opening himself up to that.
(While red is not a main part of the color scheme I do want to point out that the red of the blood on his finger could be interpreted as a passion or courage that the yellow brought out of him, allowing him to open up)
Yellow becomes more prominent now, in the ball, in the blanket, in the balloon. It is not as stable as the blue (he pokes the ball and suddenly it’s bigger than him!), but with yellow Jimin is curious and optimistic about the love that he has found.
An earthquake seems to destroy Jimin’s blue room, but he is happy. He would much rather take the chance of love (yellow) than stay here.
Blue remains present outside of the room however, I think the blue of the skies can be interpreted to represent healing and faith that coexists along with the louder energies of love (yellow)
“You’re my penicillium (blue mold), saving me”
“You’re my penicillium (blue mold), saving me”
Jimin still sits in a white rooms, he is still pure and naive, but he is no longer hiding. He’s experiencing all three colors fully now.
Yellow is the joy of love.
Blue is faith in love.
White is the innocence of love.
Yellow is the joy of love.
Blue is faith in love.
White is the innocence of love.
The yellow blanket is the main prop in Serendipity. Jimin uses it to cover himself, and when he does he is transported to a new location. Again, the yellow blanket is curiosity, but it is also love. Each time Jimin embraces this, he is given a fresh view.
+ at the end of the music video, he is no longer wrapped in the blanket, but it is still by his side. Maybe his enlightenment of love has calmed into something more stable, but without losing that happiness.
Obviously Jimin is not a prop or set piece. Really, I just want to acknowledge something I find myself thinking often whenever he is in this color, and that is that white really suits him. I think when he wears white, or is surrounded by white,
+ the softness and purity of his voice is really brought out. He seems to belong in light and goodness.
+ Also, small note, but in the end he is wearing sweater with pink ombré and this is a good choice because it helps him stand out from the background without being too bold and also brings out the pink of his lips!
All in all, I think the Serendipity music video (and Jimin) does a fantastic job of emulating the feeling of loving, and being loved back, without needing to explicitly show two people in love.
I hope you enjoy this thread, please share any thoughts you have!
And of course #HappyBirthdayJimin
