The dangers of erasing sex workers’ consent-a thread. 1) it filters down to clients as they believe the societal view that we don’t have boundaries and money has bought consent to anything. (Also this can’t be divorced from the fact that most civvies don’t understand consent
in an unpaid context either. A scary amount of people think sleeping in the same bed is consent) 2) it says that we are too poor/marginalised/deluded to know when we are consenting. This means that other women esp marginalised women are viewed as not knowing their own minds eg
Domestic violence survivors not having their needs centred, drug users being treated like small children. 3) if we don’t know what consent is then we are also viewed as fair game for not being treated with consent by others. We are told we can only access services if we stop
working. We are viewed as being complicit in our own abuse. Our images are used non-consensually by artists and filmmakers. We aren’t believed when we are raped. 4) we are viewed as being unable to make decisions about our own lives.
5) if we are unable to consent due to economic coercion isn’t that true of every woman who has an abortion due to economic circumstances? (Don’t give the right wing ideas)
