10 ways to assess procedural thinking in an online class. I use all of these, at one point or another. https://twitter.com/tomonagashima/status/1315722190189473796
Ask them to write it out in an asynchronous discussion question. Pros: good for spotting logic gaps and creating a sense of community. Cons: students may reinforce each other's errors.
1/10
Let them write it on the whiteboard in a sync session. Pros: spotting errors as they happen. Cons: requires good Internet access & odds are not everyone will be able to participate -> wasted class time.
2/10
Require students to turn in scratch work. Pros: lets you see their thinking process. Cons: major time & tech hassle to get items uploaded, marked, and turned back.
3/10
Ask them to think through it out loud in sync session as a Cold Call. Pros: easy to do, keeps students on their toes. Cons: lots of background noise, tech issues with switching audio back and forth, connection issues are often a major barrier for students
4/10
Prepare slides with multiple choice answers incorporating common errors. Pros: low-bandwidth friendly, easy to require all Ss (tablet, PC, phone) to participate via polls. Cons: requires major T investment in prep time & expertise
5/10
Prepare slides with problems that incorporate multiple S answers (S1 does 1st iteration, S2 does 2nd iteration, etc). Pros: easy to see who's got it, allows for multiple S participation at once Cons: tricky to develop problems, Ss need to be able to write on the board
6/10
Ask Ss to self assess understanding. Pros: easy to implement, keeps S attention in class, paves ground for good meta-cognition. Cons: Ss are notoriously bad at self-assessment, little meaningful data for T
7/10
Give LMS-based quiz that asks students to fill in multiple blank/ordering/matching questions with steps of the procedure. Pros: instant feedback, little teacher time on grading. Cons: T expertise required to design Qs, prep time, low Q difficulty
8/10
Assign graphic organizer requiring student to list and illustrate steps. Pros: easy to assign, clearly shows S thinking, async. Cons: T expertise to design, not all Ss have printers/scanners/ability to manipulate doc, requires bandwidth to download, time-intensive to grade
9/10
Assign worksheets for Ss to download, print, complete, scan, and upload. Pros: low bar for T expertise, easy to assign. Cons: Ss may not have tech required, little feedback during completion, time-intensive grading.
