Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day! So hey, Scottie here, and I have a few things to say!

Navigating life in the United States, or really in the world, as a native person is hard! Our cultures were taken from us, and we are still feeling the effects of the immediate genocides acted upon us, and of the slow genocides forced into our lives.
Imperialism, Manifest Destiny, "exploring the world," whatever you want to call it, it started killing us. A slow death. It cut our numbers down drastically, yes, but the long-term effects mean that without serious action we are still dying.
I could get into the hard scientific facts to back up what I just said. The way our loss of culture & language means fewer and fewer of us are comfortable claiming "native" heritage. The way our diets being forcibly changed is killing us through diabetes and the like.
What I will say is that we are still fighting to keep our heritages, our cultures, our languages, our beliefs. We are not dead yet, despite what other people-groups have done to us. We're still here.
Donate to charities benefitting native nations. Support native-owned businesses. Boost native voices. Fight for indigenous sovereignty. We are people, and we deserve the dignity and respect that settlers have tried so hard to strip from us.
