Happy Birthday to one of the all time best directors, who was taken from us way too soon, the late, great, Satoshi Kon!

I believe the best way to honor his memory is to keep his artistry alive by continuing to watch and discuss his masterful creations.
Kon's most notable work, Perfect Blue, needs little introduction. A film so iconic that its reputation and acclaim transcends the medium. It perfectly portrays the cognitive dissonance between public and private personas; a message that proves to be relevant now more than ever.
Millennium Actress takes on a completely different tone than PB, but is equally effective in conveying compelling, emotionally themes through fantastic editing and transitions between scenes and perspectives.
The narrative explores the life of a retired acting legend, Chiyoko Fujiwara, in which her real life events are interwoven with scenes from her films, crafting a touching tribute to Japanese cinema and the lifelong pursuit of love and happiness.
Tokyo Godfathers marks another tonal 180 as Kon presents one of the most quirky, heartwarming Christmas stories which follows 3 homeless people searching for the parents of a lost newborn baby on Christmas Eve while overcoming hardship to discover the true meaning of Christmas.
Paranoia Agent, Kon's only TV Series anime, serves as a perfect amalgamation of all Satoshi Kon-isms as well as a fascinating psychological exploration of how pop culture functions as both a scapegoat and a distraction from collective responsibility and social anxiety.
His last feature film, Paprika, is a surreal exploration of the blurred lines between the conscious and subconscious minds of our characters. The sublime use of transitions is perfectly illustrated in the opening, as Paprika seamlessly jumps through multiple planes of reality.
I haven't read his manga Opus (yet), but his last animated work before his passing was the 1 minute long short-film Ohaya, which speaks for itself in its charming, refreshing brevity.
So in conclusion, please check out his work!!

His many animated works have deeply moved me, so I hope they can move you as well! ❤️
