Even as New York City has made progress, there’s more work to do to end the inhumane practice of solitary confinement.

Thank you to @Jan_Ransom for a well-written piece on solitary confinement in city jails, which highlights the urgency to end it. https://nyti.ms/2H2IbiQ
@JumaaneWilliams and I have called for a model earlier this year that focuses on reducing violence & addressing underlying behavior.

We’re hoping that the recommendations incorporate this model in their findings as they aim to end punitive segregation.
The forthcoming recommendations from the task force and subsequent rulemaking also have to take important steps like ending restraint desks and providing legal representation in disciplinary hearings.
And of course, Albany should pass legislation to #HALTSolitary as a priority in the coming legislative session. @NYCAIC
