why xxxtentacion's music videos are genius (part 1: look at me!) (THREAD)
xxxtentacion didn't have many music videos, but i think the ones he did were amazing. the one for look at me! (directed by jmp) was the first one he ever did and i will analyze it in this thread.
the first part of the video looks like a very typical soundcloud rap music video, funny and not very deep. we see x in class rebelling against the teacher while the song look at me! is playing.
not even a minute later, the song stops and the scene changes. the song "riot" starts playing. this is a very short song about how riots affect people's lives and how they don't give a good image to the blm protests.
while the song is playing we see images of violent protests and real images of racial murders. x and a bunch of other people appear hanging from trees.
after the song finishes, the scene changes again. this time x is in a stagewith a white kid and a black kid in front of an audience. x hangs the white kid, while the audience and the other kid stay silent.
in the final part of the video x gives an speech about equity and equality. he says that there's not a superior race and that the youth has to be free to express themselves and be able to make a difference.
my analysis: in my opinion, this music video is genius not only because x uses clickbait perfectly by putting his most famous song in the title to deliver his message. it's also great because of all the symbolism it has. the part when he hangs the white kid shows that (1/2)
people (real people, not the ones in the audience) will get mad when they see a black man hanging a fictional white kid, but they won't respond when they see real images of racial murders. combined with how graphic the images are, it creates a very big impact in the viewer (2/2).
in conclusion, it's very impressive how x created a video like this (it was written and creative directed by him) for his first music video. also, it was released a day before 2pac's death anniversary. i'm not sure if it was intentional but it would be a cool tribute for him.
end of thread, hope you liked it :) i'll probably do the part 2 about the sad! music video soon (if i do it now it's gonna be an absurdly long thread😂) again thx for reading!
