Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay: I live on Lenape lands. I spent much of my life in Anishinaabe, Wyandot, Cherokee, Shakori, Eno, and Catawba lands. I was born in Shoshone lands. [1/4]
I respect and honor these peoples for past, present, and future stewardship of these lands. In spite of centuries of broken promises, brutal displacement, and cultural theft experienced by these and other indigenous peoples, indigenous people and their cultures endure. [2/4]
The resilience of indigenous peoples in the face of overwhelming colonialism is but one of the many aspects of their histories and cultures worthy of celebration. I acknowledge and respect the enduring status of these lands as indigenous, and am thankful to reside here. [3/4]
In honor of #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020, I hope we all take time to reflect on the heritage and cultures of our indigenous neighbors and relatives, and to celebrate their continued contributions and achievements. [end of thread]
