I want more lay people teaching seminary. Bc a) lay people serve the church too b) we need to hear the effect our pastoring has on people and c) it's more honest than requiring ordained seminary staff who had to pretend that their call was to parish ministry. https://twitter.com/Matt_Svoboda/status/1314997743648153600
Teaching seminary is it's own, legitimate call. A call that can be done by any scholar who is also an active member of a congregation, clergy or lay.
I received kind of a weird view of congregational life bc my profs were called to seminary teaching, but had to pretend they were called to congregational life for three years first. They accidentally taught me congregational life was a place of frustration and failure.
This wasn't their fault. But I was completely unprepared to experience it as a place of joy, freedom, and success. I saw them experiencing that joy as part of their *teaching.* Because that *was* their call.

Mine is parish ministry. So I experience joy there.
