Hitting results based on launch angle in D1 baseball using our in-game data:

Batted balls with 10-15 degrees of launch have produced the best results.

This counters “new school” methodology. Though it doesn’t disprove it.
Optimal launch in Major League Baseball is considered to be around 25 degrees.

So why is lower launch more productive at lower levels?

The quality of defense in Major League Baseball is simply that much better than even in D1 Baseball.
However, defense isn’t the only explanation. Selection bias is the other cause.

Even without metal bats, MLB hitters produce far higher exit velo than the average D1 hitter.

With high exit velo, fly balls are obviously much more likely to result in XBHs.
In other words, analytics don’t always discourage hitting low line drives and hard ground balls.

Data has different story to tell for each individual at every level.

Understanding this can help players become more productive immediately, and as they progress in their careers.
