HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY!

A thread➡️
What is Indigenous People’s Day?

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday celebrating Indigenous heritage and culture. 15 states in the US officially celebrate today as Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day.
Why not celebrate Christopher Columbus?

We should not celebrate an event and a colonizer that triggered genocide against Indigenous people. Praising Columbus is a way of whitewashing history and disregarding violence.
Why not celebrate the discovery of America?

It doesn’t make sense to celebrate Columbus’s arrival as the “discovery” of America, as there was already an Indigenous population on the land.
Also, Columbus never actually set foot on the American continent--he landed in the Bahamas.
Why is celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day important for the climate movement?

Rejecting colonialism is an essential element to an intersectional climate movement. Fighting climate change requires abolishing violence against our planet and the people on it...
...especially violence against people who have been historically oppressed. Indigenous people have been on the frontlines, leading the fight against climate change for years.
How can you support Indigenous people?

Listen, learn, and advocate! Find out what Indigenous Peoples’ land you’re on (check out http://native-land.ca ) and research if there are any demands by Indigenous organizations nearby that you can support.
You can also share this thread, talk to your friends and family about the holiday, & speak to your school and city officials about honoring Indigenous Peoples.
