Something that seem to drive a lot of non-German speakers nuts when Germans talk about "the digital" is the use of the 3 terms "digitization", "digitalization" and "digital transformation"

Fwiw, the way I parse it is:

1. "digitization" = purely translating something into digital formats (like scanning a text from paper)
2. "digitalization" = one step further, read using digital tools/techniques/processes to get stuff done
3. "digital transformation", the real deal

To be honest, I feel that (except for very narrow exceptions, like archives), the concept of "digital transformation" is the only one we should still be talking about in 2020.

(It all comes down to the German word being "Digitalisierung"; that's just wrangled into English, and the results are confusing AF. But also the debate here is often way behind, so that doesn't help either. "Everything that has to do with computers!")
