This #IndigenousPeoplesDay we celebrate the #Susquehannock, the original nation who lived in #HowardCounty.

An #Iroquois-speaking culture, they controlled land over New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and #Maryland. /1

#History
A matri-lineal and sedentary culture, the #Susquehannock lived in longhouses surrounded by protective palisades.

They raised dogs and hunted local wildlife, as well as grew crops of corn and tobacco. /2

From 1642-1650, #Maryland colonists attempted to war with the #Susquehannock but failed.

In 1652, as part of a treaty to protect their southern borders, the #Susquehannock ceded territory over what would become #HowardCounty. /3

The #Susquehannock would eventually fall to disease and massacres by colonists.

Their peoples were assimilated into other nations, including the #Haudenosaunee ( #Iroquois) Confederacy. /4
The last #Susquehannock was Chief Fireway, born 1899. He fought to maintain the culture and for state or federal recognition.

Unfortunately he died in 1970 without seeing his dream fulfilled. /5
