“Nazis were welcomed with open arms”- they were smuggled into the country by US intelligence agencies after US military and economic planners realized they had inherited a global empire. Americans in general had literally no input on this despite supporting the war on fascism

As much as you want to say “the us went into the war for cynical reasons” American GIs and the General population actually truly believed they were destroying fascism to make the world safe for democracy, and actually truly believed the USSR was fundamentally good
