The #AgricultureBill is being debated in parliament today. This is a chance to protect our standards in law.

A thread on why our MPs need to #SaveOurStandards. 👇
The UK is negotiating trade deals with countries including the US and Australia. As we leave the EU, we can strike our own independent trade deals – an opportunity we haven’t had for 50 years.
The UK currently has higher standards for food safety, the environment and animal welfare than many other countries in the world.

The US wants access to the UK food market – allowing the sale of poor quality US food could drive down our standards in a race to the bottom.
These new products could be:
• From animals pumped full of antibiotics
• Treated with pesticides banned in the UK
• Industrially produced in megafarms illegal in the UK

And we wouldn’t even know the difference – because the US also want to reduce food labelling.
Right now, we have a choice between a way of farming that’s sustainable and healthier – or one that’s hazardous to our health and our planet.
Lowering standards would have a massive negative impact on British farmers and food producers.

To compete, our farmers could be forced to lower their own standards or risk losing their livelihoods, putting jobs and local economies at risk.
But MPs have the power to stop this. We need to protect our high standards for food quality, the environment and animal welfare which will protect jobs, keep us all healthy and look after our planet.
