Fatima worked her ass off to make a career she loved, and is a role model for creative women of colour. Our message to her? "You're kidding yourself. You were always kidding yourself. Get a proper job." The revenge of the small-minded on those who gladly and precariously create.
UK government: we know many of us have to retrain but your ad is so tone-deaf it's deafening. Creatives know this voice well, because it's their own internal critic and they work to overcome it; the voice that constantly says THIS ISN'T A PROPER JOB. YOU ARE WORTHLESS.
This image should be inspirational, encouraging. Instead you use it to say, "Fatima doesn't know it yet, but she's going back to data entry. Serve her right for thinking she could do something that feeds her soul." Artists work hard to feed everyone's spirit; we need that now.
This is soul-destroying and not a little sinister. Behind it is the feeling that artists, unlike every other worker, are 'getting away with something' because they do what they love, and should be brought back to earth. #LetsDance and lets start this ball rolling.... #IAmFatima
Finally in this thread - let's not argue on the basis of economics. Yes, the arts make money but truly, that's not why we do it and not why you should support it. If you watch TV, listen to music, buy wallpaper, dress carefully, enjoy dancing - art makes your life better. End of.
