#SARSMUSTEND: A Thread
If the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do? The decadence in the Nigeria police force is a systemic problem, not one subject to "SARS" as a unit, hence should be approached holistically.I have said since the beginning of the protest, that
the End of Sars isn't the solution to police brutality and abuse of power. Truly it sends a message but the acts of barbarity we see being committed is done by men of the police from various units within the force.
To solve a problem, we need to understand the cause,
have you ever wondered why policemen act the way they do? Weren't they once civilians? Aren't they from the same society as we all are? Arent they the same people who once kicked against the heinous acts of police officers before they joined? They live amongst us and have families
as well. The only thing that separates them from us is their Job.
It is paramount to understand that both the actual and perceived presence of Power and Authority changes a person's behavior. You can never tell how you'd act if placed in their shoes. This is called
"The Lucifer Effect" and has been proved by "The Stanford Prison Experiment" conducted in 1971 by Philip Zimbardo.
Having said this, what we really need is an effective system put in place to prevent and curtail the unprofessional conducts and abuse of power.
One of which is the employment of extensive psychological testing and evaluation to ascertain the mental status and personality of a prospective police officer. This would go a long way in predicting their behavior and how they would likely act/react in a given environment.
As I said earlier, it is a systemic problem and this is but one of the many measures which can be put in place to curb the profane behaviors of police officers. What we need is a total police reformation. #ReformNigeriaPolice #SARSMUSTEND #SarsMustGo #NigeriaYouthsLiveMatter
