(The first time Jotaro and Kakyoin kiss, it’s in a desert, under the night sky with nobody but the moon watching. The others had already fallen asleep; one late-night conversation led to another and next thing Jotaro knows, they’ve kissed.)
Then, in Cairo, a plan: Kakyoin and Joseph go together, Jotaro goes to find Polnareff. Before Jotaro can leave, Kakyoin kisses him.

“Be careful,” Kakyoin says once they break apart.

“You too,” Jotaro says. He wants to kiss Kakyoin again, but they don’t have enough time.
(The next time Jotaro sees Kakyoin, he’s already gone.)

They bring him home to Japan. Joseph does most of the explaining. Kakyoin’s parents cry the entire time.
They ask to see Kakyoin one last time. Jotaro goes with them, watches them kiss his corpse goodbye.
Jotaro doesn’t. When he thinks of kissing Kakyoin, he thinks of warmth. He thinks of the way Kakyoin smiled against his lips, the way his fingers pulled at his hair. He doesn’t want to ruin those memories. Doesn’t want to accept that this corpse--cold, still, dead--is Kakyoin.
(Jotaro thinks of all the times he’s wanted to kiss Kakyoin. Before bed, when they shared a motel room. To celebrate a tough fight's victory. As a greeting, a goodbye. He thinks of all the times he could have kissed Kakyoin, and wonders why he never did. Twice wasn't enough.)
