🇩🇪 Here's a quick thread of 4 East German Films throughout the years that people may find compelling:

Die Legende von Paul und Paula (1973) dir. Heiner Carow

One of the most famous of the state-owned DEFA productions, two strangers that become enamored by each other, but complications ensue. Features a lot of footage of housing construction in Berlin, daily life in the East.
Heißer Sommer (1968) dir. Joachim Hasler

Two young groups of men and women from Leipzig travel up to the North of Germany for the Summer holidays in the fun summer break musical format known well in the West.
Die Architekten (1990) dir. Peter Kahane

Filmed during the final year of the GDR, an architect is given a task to build a cultural center for a housing development outside Berlin. A slow-burn film portraying the GDR at the precipice, many consider its socialist "swansong".
Coming Out (1989) dir. Heiner Carow

A high-schooler comes to terms with his sexuality. One of the first films to deal with homosexuality, and highlights many venues and figures within the queer community within the Socialist East. Premiered the night the Berlin Wall was opened.
