We’ve received some heart-breaking news today. Last year there were 183 deaths in Australian workplaces. Truly awful. Every worker has the right to go to work and come home safe. But it gets worse.(1/6)
This number is likely significantly higher. There are so many unknown figures when it comes to workplace injury and death. We know that many delivery workers are likely not included in this dataset. We know the very nature of the gig economy is putting profit over people. (2/6)
We also know that mental health hazards are seldomly tracked and treated in workplace contexts. Asking workers R U OK only does so much.(3/6)
We also know an additional 5,000 workers will die each year from illness and disease caused by their work. (4/6)
You know who else knows all this? The Government. They’ve been sitting on a Work health + Safety report with a mountain of recommendations that could help bring workers home at the end of the day. But instead there’s 183 families grieving.(5/6)
Enough is enough. Every death at work is preventable – and every death at the workplace should be prevented. The government needs to act NOW to make work safe for workers across the country. (6/6)
