The problem here behind “court packing” is the Dems don’t challenge “originalism” anymore, which is a kind of fundamentalism, the idea that a society’s constitution or institutions can never evolve. Fundamentalists if all stripes are attracted to it, naturally.
And so progress in America is forestalled, because “originalism” has become the default position of all public discourse, the idea that nothing should ever fundamentally change.
Pundits play their role in this foolish game by making “originalism” the safe position and any progressive stance the dangerous and risky one. But of course that is badly false.
If “originalism” carried any water, America wouldn’t be a collapsing society. It’s obviously false. You cannot rely on 18th century ideas to build a modern 21st century society.
Until and unless this deeper idea of originalism is challenged by the Dems as a kind of failed fundamentalism, it will cripple America just like any and al fundamentalisms do, making any progress flatly impossible, fueling further collapse.
