The word/concept of misgendering was created by trans people to describe the violent experience of being denied the most basic level of respect by refusing to recognize us as we are. It is not a cis experience.

It can be done on a small interpersonal level or a sweeping systemic scale, but the framework of cis people& #39;s power and perceived superiority to anyone who isn& #39;t cis is central to this dynamic. It does not work in reverse because trans people don& #39;t have power over cis ppl.
I could go up to my mom and call her sir or dad or something. It& #39;d confuse her, probably annoy her. But it will not call to mind a deep sense of misplacement or ostracization. It will not be me calling on centuries of violence and subjugation to make her question her worth. It +
+ will not be me brushing off something so central to her identity we have created entire systems of language to discuss this part of our identities. It is a nuisance at best, but it will never be prejudice the way misgendering a trans person is.
If you don& #39;t wanna think about the possibility of someone you admire being trans, or even consider the *FICTIONAL VERSIONS OF THEM* that fans create for fun and comfort, that& #39;s your deal. But it is never, NEVER ok to lash out at trans people with your bigotry like this.
