@jbcarmody how should applicants with hearing loss navigate the remote residency interview for competitive specialties? Their hearing equipment might not be visible. They may hear better or worse remotely. Should students disclose?
To answer my own question, I would divulge in programs that clearly show a commitment to diversity, are relatively naive to hearing issues, and if it affected clinical aspirations. In non-diverse programs, I likely wouldn't divulge. 1/
Cochlear implants in males are more visible and are a clear signifier that you are deaf. If you present as hearing, could go either way, most people don't know the issues with hearing in noise. Otherwise, probably need to disclose. 2/
It's important to consider that hearing loss affects hearing, higher level communication, and speech production. People need to consider all three and practice, practice, practice the interview. 3/
