Reminder that ‘coming out’ is largely only a ‘global phenomenon’ because colonial ideologies violently problematized and targeted Indigenous peoples’ sexualities and genders (throughout the world) that did not conform to the Christian binary-based logics of the invaders.

The ‘ritual’ of ‘coming out,’ as it exists now, would not ‘need’ to exist in a society that historically or contemporarily upheld a more ‘inclusive’ and interconnected worldview.

As such, the fact that ‘coming out’ even exists as a popular social ‘ritual’ at all, signifies how deeply destructive colonialism has been to humanity. That people have to ‘come out’ at all implies that they have to ‘hide’ in fear of being ostracized from society/community.
